Dances Made to Order

An Interview with Donna Crump

Donna Crump is one of the featured artists making a dance film for the New Orleans edition of Dances Made to Order.

Why are you interested in making dance film?

I want the viewer to use a different set of eyes, experiencing dance while taking ride with me through my wacky perception.   I’m very interested in taking dance off of the stage and placing it well…Anywhere. The angles of the camera intrigue me, and adding a dance component just lights up my world :)

What are you looking forward to about this Dances Made to Order project? What are you nervous about?

The same thing actually. Looking forward to capturing the ideas that the viewers voted for. At the same time nervous about portraying each idea to the fullest. But really looking forward to the many locations we will use and the reactions of the by passers that will wonder, “what the heck are they doing?”

If we were going to spend the day with you hanging out in New Orleans, what would we do?

The birds are chirping, Saturday morning…WAKE UP! I would shower you guys with a homemade New Orleans style breakfast from Big Mama’s Kitchen. Then we would head to the river front with your beverage of choice, (hint: most New Orleanians would bring a Daiquiri, a frozen alcoholic beverage like no other, that will put you on your back, handle with care). A walk through the french quarter, followed by a meeting at Bullet’s Bar to hear live blues, brass, and soul music. After dancing a whole into the ground, we would retire on the roof of the old Blue Plate Mayonnaise Factory while overlooking the city line. Sunday morning we shall rise, dress in black and gold, grab a daiquiri and head to the Superdome for some Saints football! Who Dat!

What is your favorite drink and where do you get it?

“The New Orleans Daiquiri” of course. You can find this refreshing, fruity, colorful, “take your time and sip or you will regret it the next day” drink at The Original New Orleans Daiquiri Shops here in the NOLA! So good you will “wanna’ slap yo’ mama.’”

Tell us something surprising about yourself.

I am actually a very shy person but I am great at hiding it.
